All the stresses that exist in materials, without the application of any external load, are termed residual stresses.
Residual stresses can originally exist in a component and therefore add themselves to the stresses induced by applied loads but they can also exist without any application of external loads.
Residual stresses can limit the loading capacity and safety of mechanical components during common operations that is the reason why in some applications it is important to quantify these stresses.
Residual stresses can be caused by the following main factors:
SINT Technology produces and develops the MTS3000-Restan system, an automatic device to measure residual stresses by the hole-drilling strain-gage method, in accordance with the ASTM E837 standard.
The MTS3000 is able to measure the residual stresses in metals and other kinds of material, such as polymers and composites both in the lab and directly on site.
The MTS3000-Restan is a fully customizable automatic system to measure residual stresses by the hole drilling method.
It consists of an optical-mechanical system with an electronic unit and controlled by a dedicated calculation software for the evaluation of residual stresses, called EVAL.
The complete measuring chain is fully compliant with the ASTM E837-20 standard.
